Educators are beginning to tap into the powerful effects of mindfulness activities for kids in the classroom. In a world full of digital distractions and access to immediate endless amounts of information, being able to sit back and meditate has become most important. Students must be taught how to unplug from the racing thoughts in their minds and plug into the peace found in the simple moments in life. Multi-tasking has it’s purpose, but being able to focus on one simple moment at a time is the best medicine for the soul.
3 Easy Mindfulness Activities for Students
The Body Scan (Progressive Muscle Relaxation)
This is a favorite of my students year after year. I love to turn on spa music, turn down the lights and tell students to find a comfy position in their desks. (at home they can lie down and try it again) Once they are relaxed with their eyes closed, I use a guided meditation audio that I find on youtube. (There are hundreds.) The guided audio walks the students through tensing and releasing muscle groups in their body starting from head to toe or vise versa.
4-7-8 Breathing Technique by Dr. Weil
I love this easy to teach breathing exercise that helps students bring in oxygen, hold it and release it slowly to maximize health. Students breathe in through the nose for 4 seconds, hold it for 7 seconds, and slowly breathe out of the mouth for 8 seconds. It’s a coping skill they can use for the rest of their lives in many situations to reduce stress and become mindful of the moment.
Mindful Balancing / Mindful Posing
Have students choose any pose that needs concentration to balance. Once they are in the balanced position, they should focus on the moment and notice their breathing. This is great to use during state testing between sub tests. Allow students to stand, stretch and pose/balance. It’s quick and easy to get back to their work.
